British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.
The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.
UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."
Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
