Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
