The artist contributes £25,000 award winnings to grassroots live spaces

Sam Fender received the prestigious award in October in the North East

The artist has donated the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to save the United Kingdom's independent concert spaces.

Fender was given the award on mid-October as his latest record his work was named the outstanding release of the past year.

He has opted to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part local spots played in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I played around the area, and beyond, when I was starting out," stated Sam Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these venues have permanently closed – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, major artists such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a modest fee to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also took part, generating more than £100,000 on his live tour to assist 38 local spots across Britain.

These funds helped spaces that were facing possible closure due to challenges caused by floods, fires and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues received funding support in improving amenities and gear that positively impacted musicians and fans.

"The concept that revenue from performances in major spaces helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just common sense," Fender has commented.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his honor winnings to worthy causes.

Back when Pulp earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their record their work, vocalist Jarvis Cocker stated that the band would give their prize money to the non-profit the charity.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her bounty between multiple organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they required better apparatus," she told the media.

In recent years, the band gave their prize money to the youth organization that developed their act, as well as other local music groups.

Additionally winners that year the group donated their award to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was sufficient," stated singer Small. "The cash was the extra but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory affected the lives of others."

Last week, the trust shared it had saved two local spots in south-east England, by bringing them into public stewardship.

One venue in that area and the second in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is funded by Arts Council England and supporters who purchase "ownership units" in the venues.
